Nativity United
Church of Christ

Nestled behind a
grove of trees on Henry Ruff where it meets West
Chicago, Nativity Church is a unique and very special
part of Livonia Community. The church began as a mission
church, meeting in the Jefferson Grade School, which was
recently torn down. It became an official church in May
of 1956. The first baby born into the new congregation
was baptized under the basketball net in the gymnasium.
His mother always maintained that this was the reason he
grew so tall and loved basketball.
We've been told by
some visitors that Nativity is the best kept secret in
Livonia. Read on and you be the judge:
The early church was
composed mainly of young families and a few older
members. Large Sunday School ? You betcha- kindergarten
alone had 20 children. Several ministers have served
Nativity, each adding to its growth in an expanding
Livonia. Two services soon became necessary, with three
on Easter Sunday. We started summer school, special banquets, a
softball team, a bowling league and a sitters exchange.
The choir was formed as well as women's activities, a men's
club etc. Somewhere along the line, the mainline
denomination, Evangelical and Reformed merged with
several other denominations, including Congregational
and became known as the United Church of Christ.
Nativity was the first to host special meetings dealing
with the current crisis of the day.
Nativity continued to grow
and serve the community. As with all growth, the young
become older and unless young people join forces with
their elders, the unit as a whole shrinks somewhat.
We have seen the glorious of times
and the sad ones. Have your children enjoyed the October
festivals and the Easter Egg hunts we have hosted? Were
you privileged to be at our fall concert last year? Then
you know what a great music program we have lead by our
Music Director Leo
Watkins. He is one of the most talented around. Are
you a part of any of the groups which meet here during
the week such as AA, the Girl Scouts, NA, or the Roamin' Rock
Club and LAFF(a group from St Michaels) or our Bible Study or
Women's Groups? Do any of your children experience the
professional and loving guidance of our Sunday School?
Health concerns? We have special programs based on
specific requests.
Nativity is a
learning, loving, friendly congregation, with a place
for you, where you can be whatever you want to be...
Are we the best kept
secret in Livonia? You be the judge. Join us on Sunday
morning and learn more about our people and our history.
Worship and Sunday School begin at 10:30 am. We have
Hospitality time following the service, so we can enjoy
fellowship with one another. Please come, you all are
invited.
